As part of our partnership with Melbourne Storm this year, we’ve been chatting to the crew about the diet of a professional NRL player during competition season. You may or may not know, but performance on the field is not JUST about training. It’s also about diet and how your dietary patterns can influence and optimise performance. The real trick to it (and where an Accredited Sports Dietitian can really help) is knowing that different players and different positions have different needs.

With that in mind, there are four key nutrients that are important for athlete nutrition – protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats and fruit and veg. These four elements will almost always make up the foundation of an athlete’s meal plan, with the exact amounts and types varying from player to player, position to position. Nutrition requirements are also influenced by training load.

As we explained in our recent article with the Melbourne Storm, nutrition is often overlooked in performance optimisation. However, plays an extremely vital role in recovery, injury prevention and immune function. Beyond that, good nutrition will also support mental acuity and quick decision making that is absolutely imperative to team sports such as NRL.

Find out more about the four elements required in sports nutrition, a day on a plate example and information on our partnership with Melbourne Storm in the full article at this link.
