Want the freshest hot cross buns straight from the oven? Look no further. You don’t need to be an all-star master chef to ace the traditional hot cross bun at home!

This recipe is easy to follow and makes a bunch for the whole family! These hot cross buns also outperform the traditional ones found in the supermarket in terms of nutrition. This recipe contains half the amount of carbohydrates and salt (sodium) per 100g, as well as a quarter of the fat. Not to mention they also ~5g of protein and fibre per serve!

They taste delicious AND these buns can be easily included within your weight loss meal plan, helping you enjoy an Easter treat without compromising your goals.

Homemade Hot Cross Buns

Serves: 10
Prep: Approx. 25 minutes (plus rising time)

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 orange, zested and juiced
  • 250ml milk of choice
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 320g plain wholemeal flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 10g or 1 sachet dried yeast
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ¼ tsp bicarb soda
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • 100g sultanas

Hot Cross Mix

  • 3 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup for topping

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Combine orange zest and juice, milk, honey, flour, vanilla, yeast, salt, bicarb and mixed spice with a mixer.
  3. Mix the mixture with a dough hook at low speed until combined and then increase the to medium and continue to mix for ~5-8 minutes.
  4. Add in sultanas and gently fold through.
  5. Cover your bowl with plastic wrap and allow to rest at room temperature for ~1 hour.
  6. While the dough is rising prepare hot cross mix. Sift flour into a jug, add water and mix well until you have a paste.
  7. Once the dough has risen shape into balls and place on a lined baking tray, fairly close together and flatten each ball a little.
  8. Use a spoon to place paste over each bun creating a cross.
  9. Place buns in over for ~25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Once cooked brush with honey or maple syrup and enjoy!
